Icy Strait Point — Small Port, Big Wildlife

Icy Strait Point is a privately owned port near the village of Hoonah, population 800. It's the smallest and most remote major cruise port in Alaska — and that's exactly what makes it special. Point Adolphus, just offshore, is widely considered the single best whale watching location in Southeast Alaska.

The ZipRider is the headline attraction: a 5,330-foot, 60 mph descent from a 1,300-foot mountain to the waterfront. Six riders launch side-by-side. For wildlife, the bear viewing excursions and whale watching tours take advantage of the uncrowded waters and dense animal populations.

This is also one of the best ports for Tlingit cultural experiences. The Huna Tribal House and cultural center offer authentic performances and history that feel personal rather than commercial.
