Juneau is Alaska’s capital city and, despite being accessible only by sea or air, one of the most-visited cities in the state. For cruise passengers, it offers the widest range of excursions of any Alaska port: helicopter glacier tours with dog sledding on ice, world-class humpback whale watching, a free hike to a blue-ice glacier face, and a craft brewery within walking distance of the ship.

The Franklin Street Docks put you 0.3 miles from the start of downtown — a flat five-minute walk. Unlike tender ports (Sitka, Icy Strait Point), there’s no wait for a boat to shore. You step off the gangway and you’re in Alaska.

What to Expect in Juneau

Juneau is one of the rainiest cities in the United States — 57 inches of annual rainfall, spread across most of the year. July is the driest month (relatively speaking) with an average high of 63°F. Come dressed for rain regardless of the forecast. A packable rain jacket is non-negotiable.

The city sits between Mount Juneau and the Gastineau Channel. Downtown is compact — most of the shops, restaurants, and attractions within a 10-minute walk of the ship. The harbor area along South Franklin Street is tourist-forward (and priced accordingly), but turn uphill and you’ll find a real working city of 30,000 people.

Juneau typically hosts 4–6 cruise ships per day at peak season (July–August). The docks can get crowded between 9am and 2pm. Early risers get the best experience — if your ship docks at 7am, be off by 7:30.

Top Things to Do in Juneau on a Cruise

Mendenhall Glacier Helicopter + Dog Sledding

The signature Juneau experience. A helicopter lifts you over the rainforest and sets you down on the Juneau Icefield, where a dog sled team is waiting. Cost: $450–$600 per person. Duration: 3.5 hours. Is it worth it? For first-timers with the budget, absolutely — there is nothing quite like standing on a glacier in July sun while huskies bark around you.

Whale Watching — Auke Bay

Humpback whales feed in Auke Bay from May through September. Local operators run 3–4 hour tours departing from downtown Juneau. Average cost: $130–$175 per adult. Sighting rate is exceptionally high — over 95% of tours encounter humpbacks. This is the best value whale watch in Alaska.

Mendenhall Glacier — Free DIY Option

The MGT bus (or an Uber) takes you to the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center for around $30 round trip. From there, a 1.5-mile trail leads to a viewpoint directly across from the glacier face and Nugget Falls waterfall. It’s genuinely spectacular and costs nothing beyond the shuttle. On a clear day, you’ll see more glacier than most helicopter passengers.

Mount Roberts Tramway

A gondola that lifts you 1,800 feet above downtown in 6 minutes. At the top: alpine meadows, a restaurant, a bald eagle flight demonstration, and views of the channel that stretch to Canada on clear days. Cost: $35 per adult. Time needed: 1–2 hours. Skip the gift shop at the base.

Downtown Juneau + Alaska Brewing Company

South Franklin Street is the tourist strip — jewelry stores, galleries, and T-shirt shops. Walk two blocks inland to find the real Juneau: a tiny, walkable city with good coffee, local restaurants, and the occasional bear sighting on the hillside behind the capitol building. The Alaska Brewing Company tap room is a 15-minute walk from the ship and worth it if you’re a beer person.

DIY vs. Ship-Sponsored Excursions in Juneau

Juneau is one of the easiest Alaska ports to do independently. Downtown is walkable, Uber works, and local excursion operators are abundant and well-reviewed. The ship’s excursion prices are typically 20–40% higher than booking the same tour directly.

Book ship-sponsored when: You’re doing the helicopter glacier tour (guaranteed ship-wait if delayed), Tracy Arm Fjord (ship-sold tours have guaranteed ship-wait), or you’ve never done this before and want the security of ship-backed logistics.

Book independent when: Whale watching (dozens of reputable local operators, significant savings), Mount Roberts Tramway (just buy tickets at the gondola base), or the MGT bus to Mendenhall (walk-up).

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is the Juneau cruise terminal from downtown?

The Juneau cruise terminal is 0.3 miles from downtown — a flat, easy 5-minute walk along the waterfront. Most ships dock at the Franklin Street Docks, putting you steps from shops and restaurants. No shuttle or bus required.

Does the ship tender in Juneau or dock at the pier?

Juneau is a docked port — you walk directly off the ship onto the pier. No tender boats. That said, Juneau can have 5–6 ships in port on busy days, so crowds on the main street can be significant between 9am and 2pm.

Is whale watching better in Juneau or Icy Strait Point?

Both are excellent. Juneau (Auke Bay) wins on operator quality and consistent humpback sightings — it's the most reliable whale watch in Alaska. Icy Strait Point is less crowded and often cheaper. If you have both on your itinerary, Juneau is the stronger whale watch.

Is the Mendenhall Glacier helicopter tour worth $600?

For first-time visitors with the budget for it, yes — the views are genuinely life-changing. But the free alternative (shuttle bus + 1.5-mile hike to the glacier face) delivers 80% of the experience at $0 extra cost. If $600 is a stretch, do the hike and spend the savings at the Tracy Arm Fjord day cruise instead.

How many hours do you need in Juneau?

Ships typically give 5–8 hours. That's enough for one major excursion (whale watch or helicopter tour) plus a walk through downtown. The Tracy Arm day cruise takes your entire port day but is worth it. Don't try to squeeze two major excursions — you'll feel rushed.
